Answers to other battery questions below.Read more about batteries...All batteries store DC electricity from electricity generators like solar panels, wind generators, micro-hydro and fuel generators. Batteries are generally used with these systems to store electricity for home use. It’s kind of like holding a lot of water in a reservoir filled from a stream to handle high demand watering times when needed, because a given stream doesn’t have enough flow all at once. In the morning Mom is cooking breakfast and the girls are using blow dryers while the laundry is drying, a large amount of electricity is being consumed, this is where batteries shine. Because it is not financially practical to size a wind generator or solar array for these high use times, your batteries cover these occasional demands, then recharge from the steady flow of your electricity generators, to be used again. Every time your batteries discharge to supply electricity, then recharge, a cycle is completed. Batteries are designed to be cycled to different depths depending upon the purpose for their use. Most lead acid batteries used with solar arrays, wind generators and micro-hydro systems are designed to use 80% of their capacity and then charge to 100% in a typical cycle. If you want your batteries to last longer then design them to cycle less then their rated depth of discharge. For example let them discharge to 50% of their rated capacity and they will have a longer lifetime. Batteries also work best at a temperature of 77 degrees F. Keeping batteries too hot will shorten their life and too cool will decrease their out put. A quality charge controller should be used to get the most out of your batteries. Never use dissimilar batteries or add old batteries to a new system. Make sure your battery bank is properly sized so they do not discharge too quickly. Understand your battery system very well and make sure it is properly designed, this will save you a lot of money and time.
